Workshops

Summer is most definitely here, and I’m thrilled to offer a brand new colored pencil workshop that stirs up nostalgic summertime memories for many of us. Sunny days with lazy afternoons, fields of wildflowers, butterflies and bumblebees floating on gentle breezes sipping nectar… This is what I wish to convey with these vibrant butterflies perched upon field thistles. I’ll show you how to create the textures and shapes that bring this artwork to life and will be using lots of new stuff to do it! This project is a departure from my usual ones. The surface will be drafting film this time, and we’ll use Polychromos pencils, a few PanPastels, some Neopastels with blending stumps for the background, and a paint pen. The Supply List is extensive. If you would prefer to simply watch and learn the many techniques I’ll demonstrate, please join me and purchase the materials at your leisure.

This class is perfect for ALL SKILL LEVELS. Students will receive material downloads that include the supply list, line drawing, an illustrated step-by-step instructional booklet, class demo directions, and the photo reference. We’ll transform a colored pencil drawing into a magnificent colored pencil painting, and I’ll teach you a variety of tips along the way. The pace will be moderate and will include a lunch break. Artworks will be critiqued privately via email, and a video recording of the entire workshop will be sent to each student within a few days of class completion. Sign up now and join me during this exciting workshop on August 17th 2024! Note: The two-page workshop registration PDF download will be in your email after your purchase.

Spring is around the corner, and I’m thrilled to offer a brand new colored pencil workshop featuring this vibrant floral still life!  During my one-day Zoom class taught only on April 27, 2024, I’ll show you how to create these gorgeous nasturtiums with their delicate petals and bright-colored stems.  We’ll explore the lustrous glass and water textures of the beautiful blue vase and discover how to render the wood table surface with its distress markings.  Lastly, I’ll show you how to install a deep black background with two pencils that will convey striking drama as it spotlights the floral bouquet.

Every now and then, THE most fabulous photo reference presents itself, and I simply must draw it and teach it as a workshop! Such is the case with this delightful image of two birds who have discovered an outdoor water faucet. In my last Zoom workshop there was a request for another bird project, so I started the search for a photo that included adorable birds, some vibrant color, several great textures, and possibly a story or clever theme. Here it is!

During my one-day Zoom workshop offered only on February 10, 2024, I’ll show you how to create this charming piece that will bring smiles to your family and friends. You’ll learn how to draw sleek as well as fluffy feathers, textured wood, rusted metal, and a natural background with a light-to-dark halo effect.

This lovely still life is the project we’ll work on together during my one-day Zoom workshop that is offered only on May 27, 2023.  The petals and leaves are similar with repetitive patterns, so this piece is perfect for ALL SKILL LEVELS.  Learn how to render the beautiful flower clusters with their sleek foliage along with the white pitcher that includes a variety of blues, purples and greys across its smooth surface.  I’ll teach you how to blend and blur pigment for seamless color transitions and how to create a realistic ribbon with shine and deep shadows.  We’ll work together on the supporting table to establish its soft wood textures and grain detail resulting in a beautiful backdrop.
